I reached out to the contact in Executive Relations to ask about this. ** 5/5 UPDATE: The issue is still present in 11.3.1. Not sure on the ETA yet but it should be fixed in the next MacOS release :) ** 3/18 UPDATE: My case got escalated and I am happy to say I was just informed that engineering has identified the issue and are working on a fix. He said he would get back to me probably next week He said many people had reported this issue and that it is getting some traction now. This guy was much better than the last one. Basically redid the troubleshooting from before, gathered logs and submitted them to engineering. ** UPDATE: talked to support again, after 2 months of them not getting back to me. Are others having this problem? My monitor also has a DisplayPort connection so I'm thinking of getting a DP to USB-C cable to test it out. This does not happen on my Intel MBP running Big Sur. I think this could potentially be an issue with Apple made chips (A chips on the iPhone/iPads, and M chips on Macs). Support got logs and are sending info to engineering, BUT I did some research afterwards and found that there have been a bunch of reports of no facetime audio via HDMI on iPhones and iPads.
#No audio macbook pro no internal speakers tv
I did test this when connecting my MBA to my 4K TV via HDMI and the issue persisted, so it is not limited to a single monitor model or vendor. Anyway, this is not to rant about support, although I am very annoyed and disappointed about it.
#No audio macbook pro no internal speakers 1080p
Support asked me for my monitor model (I have a 1080p LG ultrawide) and was a bit passive aggressive about it being HDMI and 1080p - not the latest monitor model and not the best definition. I can play other audio through the monitor speakers while the call is going on without audio too - meaning, it's not all audio that "dies" during a Facetime call, it's just the call audio.Īnyway, I talked to support about this and they were VERY QUICK to blame the external monitor for this, even though this has worked fine on the 2019 MBP and even though all other audio works fine on the M1 MBA except for Facetime. When I change the Facetime output audio to the built in speakers in the middle of the call I get audio, but when I change it back to the external speakers it goes away. When I make a Facetime call, I get the ringing sound on the external speakers no problem but as soon as the call is answered, boom, no output audio (they can hear me though). Yes, I have the system settings configured for external audio output & input, and yes I also have the Facetime settings configured for this. All other audio works fine through the monitor speakers (videos, voice notes, Microsoft Teams calls), but Facetime audio just won't.
However, when I got the M1 MBA I started having issues with Facetime audio alone. I used to have a 2019 MBP, which worked fine with the monitor speakers and an external mic (since the T2 chip disables the built in mic when the lid is closed). I have an external monitor with built in speakers connected to my Macbook via HDMI, which I run in clamshell mode. Seems to also be a problem on iPhone/iPads as well.
This wasn't a problem on Intel MBP running Big Sur. TLDR: no Facetime output audio on M1 MBA to external monitor speakers, but all other audio works fine. iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch wallpapers. These belong in the beta subreddits listed below.
